Safety — Job #1
Every parent and guardian knows that the world can be a scary place. The good news for Girl Scout families is that safety has and continues to be a priority for the organization. That has helped make Girl Scouting, including Girl Scout Cookie activities, one of the safest programs in which young people can participate.
- Selling with another person is a must, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts with adults, older girls with a buddy. When in a public place (like at a cookie shop), adults must be present at all times.
- After dark, girls cannot sell unless accompanied by an adult. Daylight hours are safest.
- Frequent transfer of cookie money to a responsible adult is important. Girls should never carry large sums of cash around with them.
- Even if they know the person who lives there, girls must not go inside without parent/guardian permission. If a customer offers to lead them somewhere else, girls should not follow under any circumstances.
- Traffic can be hazardous. Girls should be careful crossing streets, and watch for cars backing out of driveways. Girls should never approach cars to sell cookies. And, of course, a girl should not get into anyone’s car without permission from her parent/guardian.
- You can feel good about your participation in the great American tradition of selling Girl Scout Cookies because in Girl Scouting, safety always comes first! For additional information on safe selling practices, please consult your Girl Scout council.
