TOUR STOP #5: Packaging
Girl Scout Cookies Have Uniforms, Too!
In the Packaging Department, employees surround the conveyors sorting and tray-packing individual cookies. On another line, employees monitor the automatic, high speed packaging equipment that slug-wraps a different type of cookie. Sophisticated cartoners place the wrapped cookies into boxes. Just down the line the boxes are weighed and put in cases for shipping and are sent on to Distribution on conveyors. The entire process is fast, smooth, continuous and efficient. A real treat to watch!
After cooling, the cookies are channeled (lined up), stacked and portioned by weight or count into various types of packaging. The majority of packaging is done by machine, but some kinds of cookies still require hand packing or manual feeding to the wrapping machines. A specified number of packages (12 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies) is grouped and placed into a corrugated shipping container, called a case. Cased product is arranged on a pallet and shrink-wrapped to form a stable unit that can be transported easily by truck to distribution centers, stores - or to Girl Scout councils!
